themselves that all was safe at the Commissioner's Hous and at Mr. MacDonald's, and then returned to ship.

Meanwhile the sampan came alongside and I ordered all passengers inboard, one looking somewhat truculent and dangerous. I had all searched for arus but none were found.

One of these men I now recognised as the

Commissioner's personal "Boy", but on the Customs books;

at this stage the Commissioner himself arrived onboard in

a skiff and asked my permission to take the matter out of my

hands, this I concurred in.

He then interrogated the party, permitted the kidnappers to go their way and went ashore with the "Boy"

I had recognised and one other who had also been removed

from his premises.

The Police protecting his house despite his

request had failed to interfers, and the only shots fired

were the two from the Commissioner's shot gun as an alarm

signal.

The Bluebell's areed party did land on Chinese territory this was necessary to see that Mr.HasDonald's

and the Commissioner's houses were intact.

A report of the incident was sent to the

British Consul by the Commissioner and the latter received

apologies from various Chinese Officials throughout the

forenoon for the outrage that had been committed.
